Why Reupholster?
Most manufactured furniture today is mass-produced. Faster production of larger quantities means more money, but the level of quality isn't what it once was. Most manufacturers buy fabric in bulk where prices are good but durability may not extend much beyond a typical one year warranty. They start with a fresh new frame instead of taking fabric off an old one. Frames are stapled together and made with plywood rather than doweled and glued hardwoods like the frames of yesteryear, and softer woods just don't hold up to everyday sittings.
Quality furniture will also have coil springs in their foundation. If you have webbing and burlap on the bottom of your furniture, then you likely have coil springs and a nice older piece worth saving. Reupholstering also allows you to choose from a vast array of fabrics, many of which are designed for heavy-duty wear.
Years ago they didn't cut corners when constructing furniture. They didn't know how, and for this reason most pieces lasted and the furniture industry upheld a good reputation. The stronger textiles used in those days (remember Herculon?) added to the quality of that great furniture too, and I can help guide you to some great selections that are available today. There will always be variations in prices between reupholstering and new furniture, but the quality end result of reupholstering says it all.
